What Is Mulberry Silk?
And Why It Matters for Your Sleep
The word "silk" appears on a remarkable number of products. Sleep masks, pillowcases, bonnets, robes — many of them carry the word prominently, and many of them are not silk at all. Of those that are silk, not all silk is the same.
Mulberry silk is a specific and meaningful distinction — the highest grade of natural silk available, and the one that explains why quality silk products perform so differently from their cheaper alternatives. Here is what it actually is, how it differs from other silks, and why it matters for the products you use closest to your skin.
Where Mulberry Silk Comes From
All natural silk is produced by silkworms — specifically by the larvae of the Bombyx mori moth, which spin cocoons from a continuous protein fiber as they prepare to pupate. That fiber, once unwound from the cocoon and woven, becomes silk fabric.
What makes mulberry silk different is what the silkworms are fed. Mulberry silk comes from silkworms raised exclusively on the leaves of the white mulberry tree — a controlled diet that produces a fiber that is longer, more uniform in diameter, and whiter in color than silk produced from silkworms fed on other plants.
These qualities — length, uniformity, color — translate directly into a smoother, finer, more consistent fabric. The fiber has fewer natural impurities, fewer irregularities in the weave, and a surface that is genuinely smoother than other natural silks or synthetic alternatives. This is not a marketing claim. It is the direct result of the fiber's physical properties.

What Momme Weight Means — and Why It Matters
If you have spent any time researching silk products, you have encountered the term momme — sometimes written as mm. It is the unit used to measure the weight and density of silk fabric, and it is one of the most reliable indicators of quality.
A higher momme number means more silk fiber per unit of fabric — a denser, heavier, more durable weave. Lower momme weights are lighter and sheerer; higher weights are more substantial and longer-lasting.
16–19 momme: Lightweight, breathable — ideal for sleep masks, bonnets, and nightwear where lightness is the priority.
19–22 momme: The standard for quality pillowcases and robes — substantial enough to feel premium, light enough to remain comfortable.
22–25+ momme: Heavier, more durable — typically used for high-end bedding and garments where longevity is the priority.
Why It Matters Specifically for Sleep Products
The properties of mulberry silk become most relevant when the fabric is in sustained contact with your skin and hair — which is exactly what happens during sleep. A sleep mask, a bonnet, a pillowcase — these are not worn for an hour. They are in contact with some of the most sensitive skin and hair on your body for seven or eight hours at a time, every night.
For a silk sleep mask:
The skin around the eyes is among the thinnest and most delicate on the face. A mulberry silk mask sits against this skin with minimal friction — no pulling, no gripping, no texture that catches. It also stays cool through the night in a way synthetic materials do not, which matters increasingly through summer months.
For a silk bonnet:
The interior of the bonnet is in contact with hair across its full length for the entire night. The smoothness of mulberry silk means the hair moves freely rather than snagging against the fabric — which translates directly into less frizz, fewer tangles, and less breakage by morning. The low absorbency means leave-in products stay in the hair rather than transferring to the fabric.
For a silk pillowcase:
The face, neck, and hair rest against a pillowcase for every hour of sleep. Mulberry silk creates a surface that allows the skin to glide rather than drag — reducing the mechanical friction that contributes to sleep lines and hair frizz. Again, the low moisture absorbency means skincare products applied before bed remain on the skin rather than being drawn into the fabric.
How to Verify You Are Buying Real Mulberry Silk
The label is the starting point — but it requires reading carefully. A few things to check:
"100% mulberry silk" clearly stated. Not "silk blend," not "mulberry-feel," not "satin." If the fiber content is not explicitly stated, assume it is synthetic.
Momme weight listed. A brand that lists momme weight is one that stands behind its product specifications. Brands that do not list it are often hiding a low-density weave.
Care instructions provided. Real silk requires specific care — gentle wash, no tumble dry, no bleach. If a product claiming to be silk has no care instructions, it almost certainly is not silk.
Price reflects the material. Quality mulberry silk has a production cost that is reflected in the price. A sleep mask or bonnet priced at $8 and labeled "100% mulberry silk" is not 100% mulberry silk.
The Difference You Feel Every Morning
Mulberry silk is not a marketing upgrade. It is a specific material with specific properties that perform differently from alternatives — natural or synthetic. Those properties become most apparent over time: skin that is not dragged against a rough surface for thousands of hours. Hair that encounters less friction across every night of sleep. A fabric that remains soft and consistent rather than degrading with washing.
That consistency — quiet, cumulative, working while you sleep — is what makes the material worth understanding before you buy.
All Silkvana products are made from 100% mulberry silk — material clearly stated, momme weight specified, care instructions included.
